Thor's hammers were popular amulets during the Viking Age. Thor, the god of thunder, had a magical hammer called Mjollnir. He used this hammer to protect both gods and mortals. Hence the Thor's hammer was worn as a talisman of protection, as well as by followers of Thor. Thor's hammers have been found in Anglo Saxon burials as well as viking sites.
While most Thor's hammers that are offered for sale are replicas of old pieces, Master Ark has created original Thor's hammers, inspired by the originals.


    This is Master Ark's bronze Thor's hammer. The photograph shows both the front and the back of the hammer.

                                                  Urnes Beast

If you are interested in Thor's hammers you might also be interested in this classic Viking style piece. The Urnes style combines thick and thin elements in an interlacing pattern and often features fantastical beasts. I carved the original for this piece out of elk antler and have it in cast bronze. It measures the same as an original Viking piece, being 5 1/2 by 5 cm. I make it as a pendant or as a brooch. The cost is $45 Canadian.

This Thor's hammer is made from a piece of moose antler. The hammer is set with a piece of amber, highly prized by the Vikings and frequently worn as jewelry. Amber is a stone of protection.

The hammer is 7cm x 5 cm. The cost is $100 Canadian.
